I started my long-awaited Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) training this week. CPE is a nationally recognized program for clergy and chaplains-in-training that combines hands-on chaplaincy in hospitals or with intensive reflection and supervision. It helps chaplains learn how to listen deeply, accompany people through suffering, and grow in self-awareness.
I’ll be doing hospital visits at Terrence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Center in East Harlem, a long-term residential care facility where there’s a great need for Spanish-speaking chaplains. I’m already learning so much from the training (and it’s just the first week). As a bonus, the center is right across from the Conservatory Garden in Central Park, which is beautiful.
